ChatGPT vs Bruin
Data agent and Dots vs an AI data analyst with the pipeline included
ChatGPT's Data agent queries a warehouse you already govern. Dots are always-on personal agents in Slack and Teams. Bruin is an AI data analyst that loads, models, and checks the data before it answers, in eight chat surfaces. Here is where each one fits.
The Real Question
Who is responsible for the number?
ChatGPT answers from what you connect:
The Data agent queries Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, ClickHouse, and MongoDB under your existing permissions. A dot works across 4,000+ apps from its own cloud computer.
- ChatGPT Work customer with a governed Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks warehouse
- Metric definitions already in dbt, Snowflake Horizon, or Databricks Genie
- Dashboards already in Power BI, Tableau, Sigma, or Omni
- Wants a personal agent for ongoing work across many apps (Dots)
- Data team stays responsible for loads, models, and checks
Bruin answers from data it keeps correct:
Ingestion, SQL and Python transformation, quality checks, lineage, and the analyst live in one open-source project, so the answer carries the state of the pipeline that produced it.
- Ingestion, SQL and Python transformation, checks, and lineage in one open-source project
- Analyst in Slack, Teams, Google Chat, WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, email, and the browser
- Knows whether last night's load passed before it reports a number
- Dashboards as code and scheduled agents on the same governed definitions
- Apache 2.0 CLI, self-hostable, available to European teams

Fair Assessment
Where ChatGPT works well
If your company already runs a governed warehouse with metric definitions in dbt, Snowflake Horizon, or Databricks Genie, and you are a ChatGPT Work customer, the Data agent is a serious question layer. It respects the table, row, and column permissions you already set, and it builds dashboards in ChatGPT or in the BI tool you already have.
- Queries the warehouses data teams already run, with the permissions they already set
- Reads existing metric definitions instead of guessing
- Builds dashboards inside ChatGPT or in the BI tool you already have
- Dots carry context across ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams and work while you are away
A dot is the right tool for a personal work agent. It is not a data analyst, and OpenAI does not position it as one.
Limitations
Where ChatGPT stops for company data
No pipeline of its own
The Data agent queries what someone else loaded and modelled. If your data lives in Postgres, Stripe, HubSpot, and Shopify with no governed warehouse in between, there is nothing trustworthy to connect. Bruin builds that layer.
Cannot see a failed load
Nothing between the warehouse and the model knows that the 03:00 orders load failed, so yesterday's rows are reported as today's. Bruin's checks run in the pipeline and the analyst reports the state before the number.
Verification is on the user
OpenAI's guidance is to check the source, time period, filters, and metric definition before relying on a result. Bruin shows the SQL, the lineage, and the check status with the answer.
Dots are not analysts
A dot is a personal work agent across 4,000+ apps. It has no warehouse connector and no metric definitions, so it answers data questions the way a new hire would: by looking for a dashboard or a person.
Regional and plan gates
Dots exclude EEA, Swiss, and UK Pro users at launch, and the Data agent requires ChatGPT Work. Bruin's CLI runs anywhere and Bruin Cloud serves European teams.
Closed
Neither the Data agent nor dots can be self-hosted or read as code. Bruin's CLI is Apache 2.0 and the pipeline, checks, and semantic layer are files in your repository.
Purpose-Built
What Bruin gives you that ChatGPT does not
The pipeline behind the answer
ingestr loads the sources, SQL and Python assets model them, checks run on every table, and the analyst answers from that state. One project, one command to run it.
Eight chat surfaces
Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, email, and the browser. The same analyst, the same definitions, wherever the team already talks.
Blocking quality checks
Freshness, not-null, accepted-values, and custom SQL checks declared on the asset that produces the table. A failed check stops the run and the analyst says so.
Column-level lineage
Derived from the SQL Bruin runs, so every number traces to a source column without a second tool or a warehouse query log.
Dashboards as code
A prompt becomes a dashboard file on governed definitions, reviewed in a pull request like everything else.
Open source, anywhere
Apache 2.0 CLI you can run on a laptop, in CI, or in your VPC. Bruin Cloud adds the analyst, dashboards, catalog, and governance.
Our Honest Take
"ChatGPT answers from whatever you connect it to. Bruin answers from data it keeps correct."
The model is not the difference; GPT-6 Astra writes excellent SQL. The difference is that the Data agent's answer is as good as the warehouse behind it, and OpenAI says so. Bruin runs that warehouse's pipeline, checks, and lineage, which is why it can say "last night's load failed" instead of reporting yesterday's number as today's.
Decision Guide
When to choose each
Choose ChatGPT if...
You are a ChatGPT Work customer with a governed warehouse and definitions in dbt or Horizon
Your dashboards live in Power BI, Tableau, Sigma, or Omni and you want to build more there
You want a personal agent for ongoing work across many apps, not a data analyst
Your data team owns loads, models, and checks and wants a question layer only
Choose Bruin if...
You do not have a governed warehouse yet, or you want one platform to build and run it
You want the analyst to know whether the data passed its checks before it answers
Your team asks in WhatsApp, Google Chat, Discord, or Telegram as well as Slack and Teams
You want lineage, dashboards, and definitions as code in your own repository
You need an open-source core you can self-host, or availability in Europe
Frequently asked
- Can ChatGPT answer questions about my company data?
- Yes, in two ways. The Data agent in ChatGPT Work connects to Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, ClickHouse, and MongoDB with your existing permissions and answers with queries and dashboards. A dot answers from the apps you connect to it. In both cases ChatGPT does not load, model, or check the data, so the answer is as good as the warehouse behind it. Bruin runs that pipeline itself and answers from its checked state.
- What is the difference between ChatGPT Dots and the ChatGPT Data agent?
- A dot is an always-on personal agent with its own cloud computer, powered by GPT-6 Astra, that you message in ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams and that works across 4,000+ apps. The Data agent is a plugin in ChatGPT Work that you invoke with @Data to query a connected warehouse and build dashboards. Dots are for ongoing work; the Data agent is for questions over governed data.
- Is Bruin an alternative to the ChatGPT Data agent?
- For the question layer, yes: both answer company data questions in chat and build dashboards. Bruin also includes what the Data agent assumes exists: ingestion with ingestr, SQL and Python transformation, quality checks on every table, column-level lineage, and a semantic layer in code. Teams without a governed warehouse get the whole stack; teams with one get an analyst that knows whether last night's load passed.
- Are ChatGPT Dots available in Europe?
- Not for individual Pro users at launch: OpenAI's rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Business Premium users get dots in all supported ChatGPT regions, and Enterprise is an admin-enabled beta. Bruin's open-source CLI runs anywhere, and Bruin Cloud serves European teams with data residency requirements.
- Is ChatGPT free for data analysis?
- Uploading a file and asking questions works on paid ChatGPT plans. The Data agent requires ChatGPT Work and has no separate published price. Dots come with Pro and Business Premium, with the first dot included and usage not counted toward plan allowances for the first month. Bruin's CLI is free and Apache 2.0 licensed; the AI data analyst is part of Bruin Cloud.
